Dr. Kenneth Tsang, President, HKTS, Dr. Thomas Mok, President ACCP (Hong Kong & Macau Chapter)

Due to the extensiveness of the concern of the harmful effect of passive smoking and environmental tobacco smoke, six medical professional bodies have set up an ad-hoc working group to structure agenda for and support the amendments to Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance. A press conference for the purpose was held on 11 September 2001 at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong Hotel.

These six medical professional bodies were the Hong Kong Lung Foundation, Hong Kong Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians (Hong Kong & Macau Chapter), the Hong Kong College of Cardiology, the Obstetrical & Gynaecological Society of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Society of Radiation Therapy & Oncology. The three Chest Societies were represented by Prof. Moira Chan-Yeung, Dr. Kenneth Tsang and Dr. Thomas Mok. A grant from the Hong Kong Lung Foundation was obtained which made this press conference possible.

Dr WL Lo, representative of the Legislative Council – Medical Functional Constituency, had sat on the panel to address this issue at the press conference with other representatives from the six medical societies. Reporters from 20 different newspapers and media (13 newspapers, 1 medical magazine, 3 TV channels and 3 radio channels) had attended the press conference. A lot of questions had been asked and answered.

Special articles had been published on HK Commercial Daily News, HK Daily News, Oriental Daily News, Ming Pao, HK Economic Times and South China Morning Post on 12 September 2001.
